Understanding the Early Years
Foundation Stage
Since September 2008, the Early Years Foundation
Stage (EYFS) has become a statutory framework for all
registered early years settings, nationally. This includes all
Schools, Nurseries, Pre-Schools, Playgroups, Day Care Centres and
Child-Minding Establishments in the county. It is the framework for
children from birth to five years old, and holds the same legal
force as the National Curriculum.

The Aims of the EYFS
|
What's in the Pack?
|

The EYFS is for all children from birth to five.
The EYFS principles are the starting point for effective
practice.
The EYFS builds on what Practitioners already do well.
The EYFS brings learning and welfare requirements together.
The EYFS supports continuity and coherence for all children.
Within the ‘Learning and Development’ theme
the importance of Active Learning, Creativity and Critical Thinking
are promoted alongside the 6 areas of learning.
The 6 areas of learning are Personal Social
and Emotional Development, Communication Language and Literacy,
Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding
of the World, Creative Development and Physical Development.
The 6 areas of learning within ‘Learning and
Development’ all have equal status, and planning tends to be from a
thematic or topic based approach which allows activities to be
cross curricular.
It is important to note the importance that the EYFS places
on learning through the everyday routines and not just through
‘lesson times’. Some practitioners find it helpful to plan for
these times so that the learning opportunities can be clearly seen
by all. An example of ‘Routines’ planning can be found
here.
