Indoor construction should be:
- Easily accessible by the children with a good range of
different construction materials, including natural and/or
reclaimed materials, where possible
- Clearly labelled and easy to organise so that the children can
choose freely, and help to put the resources away
- In a space where children can build without
restriction
- Near mark-making opportunities so that children can draw/write
about their creations
- Filled with books linked to the theme e.g. books about houses
to be placed in the construction area if the topic is about
Ourselves or houses
- Regularly enhanced to incorporate the theme/topic and the
children’s interests
- Providing opportunities for the children to display/discuss
their finished models.

Small World that Combines a Range of Materials and
Textures

Small world areas should
have:
- A good selection of resources that are easily accessible
to the children
- Clear labels and be easy to organise so that children can
choose/play freely and help to put away resources
- Be on a low table or on the floor in a tuff spot so that
children can play/talk and role-play collaboratively
- Regularly enhanced to incorporate the theme/topic and the
children’s interests
- Imaginatively resources e.g. using leaves with a tray of
mini-beasts or sand with a tray of sea creatures.
