Indoor Music and Sound-Making Areas

An effective ‘ Music and Sound-Making Area’ would include many features. This should:

  • Be located in an indoor and outdoor area in which the children can experiment, play, move and make noise
  • Incorporate man-made and natural objects for the children to explore. For example, bamboo, coconut shells and bells.
  • Offer a variety of quality percussion instruments from a  range of cultures
  • Include resources which can be transferable and used in other learning areas. For example, the triangle could be used in the PSRN area when counting or exploring shapes
  • Enhanced with books, poems, songs and photographs
  • Accessible during all times of day
  • Provide opportunities for the children to listen and respond to a range of genres and music from other cultures and eras
  • Provide opportunities for the children to compose, record and share their sound and music
  • Enhanced according to children’s interests, developmental needs, any possible themes and responses to observations.
