Linking Sounds and Letters

It is no surprise to find that the main ingredients for success in the teaching of beginner readers are: a well trained teaching force; well designed, systematic programmes of work that are implemented thoroughly; incisive assessment of teaching and learning, and strong, supportive leadership..

Sir Jim Rose, 2006
(Independent review of the teaching of early reading)

Linking Sounds and Letters is about how children
develop the ability to distinguish between sounds
and become familiar with rhyme, rhythm and alliteration.
They develop understanding of the correspondence
between spoken and written sounds and learn to link
sounds and letters and use their knowledge to read and
write simple words by sounding out and blending.
