Graduate Sponsorship

The Local Authority is committed to growing a well-qualified workforce and therefore is continuing to offer sponsorship to those who meet the criteria below:

  • Only one candidate per setting can apply for funding (including Registered Childminders) unless the setting is in a 30% disadvantaged area when it will be max of 2.  Funding will only be offered to candidates that are working in a setting where there IS NOT a graduate already employed (unless they are to be the second graduate in nominated 30% areas) *if you are unsure if your setting is in a 30% area or not, please contact a member of the workforce development team on 01522 552756
  • Candidates MUST have been employed in their current position (or registered as a Childminder) for 6 months minimum, prior to making an application for funding
  • Candidates MUST be working for a minimum of 25 hours per week in a single setting (for a minimum of 35 weeks per year) in a leadership role
  • Candidtes MUST be working in an early years PVI setting in Lincolnshire.  *The decision is based on the address of the setting, not the address of the growing graduate, for example if you live in Grimsby but work in Louth you would be eligible to apply but not if the situation were the other way around.
  • Candidates must be committed to working towards Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) within 2 years of completing the Foundation Degree
  • Applicants must hold a GCSE (A-C) or equivalent in both English & Maths (these must be recognised as appropriate for entry to the EYPS pathway

GCSE English or equivalent (definition)

“EYPS candidates must have a GCSE grade C or above in English and Mathematics, or a recognised equivalent, to complete one of the EYPS training and assessment Pathways”

“Level 2 key skills in application of number and communication, and certificates in adult literacy and adult numeracy, are not sufficient to meet this requirement.  Although they are at the same level of the national qualifications framework (NQF) as GCSE A-C grades, they do not cover the full breadth of knowledge demanded by GCSEs.”

“Equivalency Testing” provide equivalent GCSE testing for students who have not reached the standard grade in previous learning institutions.

“If you are unsure about the equivalence of a qualification gained overseas, please contact the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) at ECCTIS Ltd, Oriel House, Oriel Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL50 1XP (Tel: 01242 260010).”

It should be understood by the student that they will be responsible for paying the difference if the course fees exceed the sponsorship amount.

A maximum of £1000 will be paid per annum to support the cost of the Foundation Degree level 5 / BA level 6 (as long as it is a recognised degree that would be accepted on the full EYP pathway).

Student loans should be available from each educational organisation, it should be noted its is the responsibility of the candidate to investigate this.

Full-time and part-time students who start their course after 1 September 2012 begin paying back their student loan once they earn more than £21,000 year.

Repayments for courses starting after 1 September 2012 won't begin until April 2016.

For example, if your course finishes in June 2015 and you get a job paying £25,000 in September 2015, you start repayments in April 2016.

If your income falls below £21,000 a year, your repayments stop.

If you're a part-time student earning more than £21,000 a year you start repaying your loan in the April four years after starting your course. This applies even if you're still studying.

Students can pay back all or some of their loan at any time without incurring an early repayment charge.

Note: funded trainees will be expected to remain within the early years workforce for 2 years following graduation or they may be required to repay a percentage of payments made.

FUNDING APPROVAL FOR THE 2012/2013 PERIOD DOES NOT MEAN THAT FEES FOR APRIL 2011 ONWARDS WILL BE GUARANTEED, if a course continues beyond this period a further application will be required as Government funding allocations vary in their criteria and target audience – a completed application form will be required for each request for funding

If the funding awarded has not been claimed within 3 months of the approval, applicants will have to re-apply for the funds and will be subject to any new criteria at the time of application.

If you have any queries regarding this process please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the Birth to Five Service Workforce Development Team on 01522 552756
